Nepal court lifts ban on Indian films

A court in Nepal has lifted a ban placed on Indian films, including “Adipurush”, which is an adaptation of the Ramayan.

The ban was announced by the mayor of Kathmandu, Balendra Shah, who took issue with a particular piece of dialogue.

In the movie, the character that aligns with Sita is referred to as “India’s daughter”, which contradicts the belief held by Hindus in Nepal that Sita was born in their country.

According to the Hindustan Times, a single bench of the Patan High Court judge Dhir Bahadur Chand issued a short term order today, stating that the screening of films that have acquired permission from the censor board should not be stopped.

Mr Shah insisted the matter pertains to “Nepal’s sovereignty and independence”.

He has also reportedly vowed not to adhere to the court order.
